Observation Narrative
Plot location: N-facing slope of 180 degrees bend in Hardware River, N of the James River, NW of Hardware.
The plot is located on the upper portion of a steep, north-facing bluff along the Hardware River. Soils are extremely acidic and infertile, supporting a mixed oak-beech forest with dense Kalmia latifolia shrub layer. The evergreen Hexastylis virginica is one of the few herbaceous plants that thrives in the dense shade of the Kalmia. This stand is a medium-age second-growth forest that has recovered from logging and chestnut blight.
